About this process

Painting in a residential setting is a common project that can give a fresh look to a room, a fixture, or an entire house. Here’s a basic guide to our process:

We always aim to exceed expectations—at every project

  • Understanding the full scope of work is crucial to correct installation
  • From preparation to finish with trim—we aim to get it right
  • Our team has the expertise to get the project completed successfully

RHD Painting Process:

1. Preparation:

      • Gather Supplies: Collect all the necessary supplies, including paint, primer, brushes, rollers, painter’s tape, drop cloths, sandpaper, and paint trays.
      • Prepare the Surface: Clean the walls or surface to be painted to remove dirt, dust, and grease. Repair any cracks or holes with spackle or filler, and sand the surface smooth. Remove switch plates, outlet covers, and any other fixtures.
      • Protect Surroundings: Cover floors, furniture, and any areas not being painted with drop cloths or painter’s tape to prevent accidental spills or splatters.

2. Choosing Paint:

      • Selecting the right type of paint is crucial. Consider factors such as the surface to be painted (walls, trim, ceiling), the desired finish (flat, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss, gloss), and any special requirements (such as moisture resistance for bathrooms or kitchens).
      • Purchase enough paint to complete the job, taking into account the size of the area to be painted and any additional coats needed for coverage.

3. Priming:

      • Depending on the surface and the type of paint being used, applying a coat of primer may be necessary. Primer helps the paint adhere better to the surface, provides a uniform base color, and can help hide imperfections.

4. Painting:

      • Cutting In: Use a brush to “cut in” or paint along the edges of the walls, ceiling, and trim where a roller may not reach. This creates clean lines and prevents overlap marks.
      • Rolling: Use a roller to apply paint to the larger areas of the walls. Start from the top and work your way down in sections, using a “W” or “M” pattern to ensure even coverage.
          • Multiple Coats: Depending on the color and type of paint, multiple coats may be needed for full coverage. Allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next one.
          • Drying Time: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for drying times between coats and before removing painter’s tape or reapplying fixtures.

      5. Cleanup:

          • Clean brushes, rollers, and other painting supplies with soap and water or the appropriate solvent, depending on the type of paint used.
          • Remove painter’s tape carefully to avoid peeling off any paint. Dispose of drop cloths and other protective coverings.

      6. Finishing Touches:

          • Once the paint is dry, reattach switch plates, outlet covers, and any fixtures that were removed. Touch up any missed spots or imperfections if necessary.

      7. Maintenance:

          • Properly maintained painted surfaces can last for years. Clean painted walls regularly with a mild detergent and water solution to remove dirt and grime. Touch up any chips or scratches as needed to keep the paint looking fresh.

      F.A.Q.

There are many different details that surround installing various types of painting methods. Our team is always happy to help you learn more about your project.

Why type of paint finish should you use?

The choice of paint finish depends on the desired look and the room’s function. Flat or matte finishes are ideal for hiding imperfections but may not be as durable as eggshell, satin, semi-gloss, or gloss finishes, which are easier to clean and more resistant to moisture.

How do you prepare the surface before painting?

Surface preparation is essential for a smooth and long-lasting paint job. Clean the surface to remove dirt, dust, and grease, repair any cracks or holes, sand rough areas, and apply painter’s tape to protect adjacent surfaces.

Do you need to prime before painting?

Priming is recommended for certain surfaces, especially if they are new, porous, or have stains or discoloration. Primer helps the paint adhere better, provides a uniform base, and can prevent stains from bleeding through.

How long does paint take to dry?

Drying times vary depending on the type of paint, the thickness of the coat, temperature, and humidity. Generally, water-based paints dry faster than oil-based paints. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for specific drying times between coats and before applying additional finishes.

How can you maintain painted surfaces?

Regular cleaning with a mild detergent and water solution can help keep painted surfaces looking fresh. Touch up any chips or scratches with matching paint as needed, and address any moisture or mold issues promptly to prevent damage.
